President Gül Visits the City the Treaty of Westphalia was Signed in
President Gül along with President Wulff explored Osnabrück where the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648. The President, offering his thanks to the people for the great enthusiasm they displayed for him and the First Lady, referred to Ayşegül Özkan, a Minister in the State of Lower Saxony, lauding her for setting a good example for others in Turkish community’s adaptation process in Germany.


The Presidents and the First Ladies, upon their arrival at the square the Municipality of Osnabrück is located in, proceeded to the crowd holding both countries’ flags and showing great excitement for them.

President Gül extended his thanks to the people of Osnabrück for their great enthusiasm, saying: “It is great to observe the people of Osnabrück, including German citizens, immigrants and those of Turkish descent living in harmony and who displayed their enthusiasm with great intimacy to us. Let me congratulate you on creating such a great atmosphere here.”

A TURKISH MINISTER IN LOWER SAXONY

The President further declared Ayşegül Özkan, Minister of Social Works, Women, Family Affairs and Adaptation in the State of Lower Saxony, to demonstrate how well the Turkish community has adapted itself into social life in Germany, reiterating his gratitude to President Wulff for their hospitality.

WULFF: WE WERE DEEPLY IMRESSED BY OUR VISIT TO KAYSERI

President Wulff evinced his happiness to welcome President Gül and Mrs. Gül to his hometown, the city of Osnabrück, which he said is the symbol of peace, averring: “I witnessed how much my dear friend, President Gül, is loved by citizens during our visit to his hometown, the city of Kayseri. My spouse and I were deeply impressed by this visit.” He further shared his pleasure to observe that Minister Ayşegül Özkan was among the people welcoming them today, adding that the Turks living in Germany have accomplished great things there.

Mayor of Osnabrück also delivered a speech on the occasion of the Presidents’ visit to his city during which he revealed their sympathy for Turkey’s agony rising from the bomb blast occurring in Ankara today. He further underscored the importance of peace and recalled that Osnabrück and Turkish city of Çanakkale are sister cities, by which way he continued the two peoples could get to know each other.

Mayor Pistorius then informed his audience that there is square in the city named after Yılmaz Akyürek, a late Turkish community member who greatly contributed to the adaptation process of the Turks residing in the city.

GREAT ENTUSIASM FOR THE FIRST COUPLES

The two President and the First Ladies afterwards signed the guest book and explored the place where the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648.

They also visited both St. Marien Protestant Church and Osnabrück Cathedral. On their way to the cathedral, they enjoyed great enthusiasm from the people of Osnabrück.
