Berlin, March 8, 2011.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner visited Germany

Tuesday for meetings with senior finance and government representatives to discuss the global economic outlook and progress on international financial reform.

In Franfkurt, Secretary Geithner met with President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Jean-Claude Trichet and President of the German Bundesbank Axel Weber.

Later the same day in Berlin, Geithner met with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble and German Federal Minister for Economics and Technology Rainer Brüderle.

In a joint press conference with Minister Schäuble, Secretary Geithner told journalists that he came away from his discussions “convinced, as I have been for some time, that the European authorities understand what it’s going to take and how they are going to make sure that they maintain the right balance between support for the reform programs that are necessary for these countries to address their problems, but also the type of financial support necessary to make those reform programs work.”
