Joint statement of President Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and Prime Minister David Cameron of United Kingdom to Egypt

We are deeply concerned about the events that we are witnessing in Egypt. We recognise the moderating role President Mubarak has played over many years in the Middle East. We now urge him to show the same moderation in addressing the current situation in Egypt.

We call on President Mubarak to avoid at all costs the use of violence against unarmed civilians, and on the demonstrators to exercise their rights peacefully.


It is essential that the further political, economic and social reforms President Mubarak has promised are implemented fully and quickly, and meet the aspirations of the Egyptian people.


There must be full respect for human rights and democratic freedoms, including freedom of expression and communication including use of telephone and internet, and the right of peaceful assembly.


The Egyptian people have legitimate grievances and a longing for a just and better future. We urge President Mubarak to embark on a process of transformation which should be reflected in a broad-based government and in free and fair elections.

"Alles tun, um sicherzustellen, dass Griechenland nicht isoliert ist" - Frankreichs Präsident Sarkozy hat dem griechischen Premier Papandreou Hilfe der Eurostaaten zugesagt, um die Finanzkrise des Landes zu bewältigen. Wie die Unterstützung konkret aussieht, ließen die Staatsmänner vorerst offen.

Am Freitag hatte bereits Bundeskanzlerin Merkel der Regierung in Athen politische Unterstützung für ihren Sparkurs zugesagt. Papandreou sagte nach den Treffen mit Sarkozy, Merkel und Luxemburgs Ministerpräsident Jean-Claude Juncker, es zeichneten sich nun spezifische Schritte ab, mit denen man auf mögliche Probleme bei der Kreditaufnahme reagieren könnte.

Der griechische Ministerpräsident flog noch am Sonntag in die USA, um dort mit US-Präsident Barack Obama zusammenzukommen.

Griechenland hatte am Mittwoch ein neues Sparpaket im Volumen von 4,8 Milliarden Euro beschlossen. Damit will das Land sein Staatsdefizit von zuletzt 12,7 Prozent drücken.
